Hunters save elk from a muddy grave http://bit.ly/2rZPb5w

Tony Hentz, of Melrose, and his wife were setting up for an evening Wyoming elk hunt in September when they came across a 4×4 bull stuck in a deep mud pit.

They heard the bull making noise as it tried to get out of the pit.

“We tried for an hour to get it out, but were unsuccessful with the gear we had with us,” Hentz said.

They went back the next day after Hentz shot a spike bull. They anchored ratchet straps to a tree, tied a rope around his rack, hooked the strap to the rope and winched him out. The bull couldn’t move due to exhaustion.

Hentz returned two days later to get his straps and the bull was gone. He found a dead cow elk in the pit – a 7-foot pole didn’t hit the bottom.
