97-Year-Old Still Running for Love

‘If I collapse, make sure I’m dead before you call 911.’ It’s not a common thing to hear from a runner. But then again, George Etzweiler isn’t your average athlete.

Etzweiler is 97 years old. And he’s still racing.

The first time he raced up Mount Washington — 7.6 miles on paved road with a 4,700-foot elevation gain — Etzweiler was 69. Since then, the State College, Penn., resident has set the record for oldest finisher every time he’s completed the race.

Today, he doesn’t worry about his heart rate. He has a pacemaker for that. And more important than his lucky green running shorts, Etzweiler carries something special in every step: the memory of his late wife of 68 years, Mary.

From Sharptail Media, this inspiring story, “For the Love of Mary,” makes us believe in love and putting one foot in front of the other.
