Can outdoorsy people of color here give any insights as to why the outdoors world is so white?

Just read a big piece on how to make the outdoors more diverse and inclusive (https://www.theatlantic.com/sponsored/rei-2018/five-ways-to-make-the-outdoors-more-inclusive/3019/) I liked the suggestions overall but still don't know what would actually move the needle (certainly some of these would be worth trying).

Anyway, just curious if any non-white outdoorsy people on here can shine any light on why the outdoors are so generally filled with white people like me.
