I've been looking at guide tarps to go camping with as a shelter for a while while I build my camping supplies up, and possibly put a bush craft shelter in place. For a 10x10 tarp, it's rather expensive, however, I have noticed that a lot of survival experts mention that in a bug out bag, you should carry a trash bag just in case, you can turn it into a shelter. So I took it one step farther.
I took 6 - 6 mil black "contractor" style trash bags and opened the bottom and one side to make 64" x 32" plastic canvases, and then used gorilla tape to tape both sides of the seams, then I took key rings, fastened 550 cord loops to them, and mashed them in between another layer of gorilla tape on 5 points on each side of the tarp, and 2 on the top. Then after all that, I took heavy duty upholstery thread and stitched the key rings in between the layers of tape to secure them and prevent pulling or destroying the tarp under wind or line taughtness. (THAT is still in progress, because it's a long, long, process)
Before everyone jumps on me, this is a first attempt at this only as an emergency shelter, not for regular camping, etc. I am going to take it camping and test it out, I'm curious as to see how feasible this actually is.
