NORTHWEST REGION
Lake Erie — The walleye bite remained outstanding through mid-July in various depths to 40 feet or deeper. Stickbaits off mini boards and dipsy divers were effective, as were single- or double-bladed crawler harnesses. Some anglers were drift-fishing for walleyes. Some yellow perch were reported but the bite this summer has been disappointing overall.
Kahle Lake (Clarion County) —Largemouth bass and some bluegills were hitting through July 18.
Piney Dam, Upper Clarion River (Clarion County) — Smallmouth bass were in the shallows from upstream of Cooksburg to the PF&BC Millcreek Access Area. Walleyes were hitting in the early morning and late evening hours from the Clarion Borough water plant upstream to the Millcreek Access Area. The same section was yielding channel catfish at night.
Lower Clarion River (Clarion County) — Smallmouth bass were biting throughout the lower river, with crankbaits, top water lures, and various soft plastic effective in recent weeks. Anglers were catching walleyes near Turkey Run and Grassy Flats.
Allegheny River — Smallmouth bass were reported from Emlenton downstream to Lock No. 9 through July 18. Channel catfish were biting at night. Boaters in the East Brady pool are advised that Redbank Creek is now a “Slow No Wake Area” from the confluence with the Allegheny River upstream approximately 2 miles.
Redbank Creek (Clarion County) — Anglers were catching trout and smallmouth bass at the dam in New Bethlehem through July 18.
Beaver Creek Ponds Project (Clarion County) — Anglers were catching largemouth bass and bluegills in recent weeks.
SOUTHWEST REGION
Ohio River (Allegheny County) — Walleyes and catfish were hitting on minnows and crawlers in the back channel through mid-July.
Allegheny River (Armstrong County) — Walleyes and smallmouth bass were reported below Lock No. 6 through July 18.
Crooked Creek Lake (Armstrong County) — Catfish were reported on crawlers in recent weeks.
Acme Dam (Westmoreland County —Bass up to 3 pounds were reported on crawlers through July 18.
Green Lick Reservoir (Fayette County) —The night bite on bass was productive in recent , weeks, with largemouths hitting on buzz baits.
Quemahoning Reservoir (Somerset County) — A few walleyes and some nice largemouth bass were hitting in recent weeks.
Laurel Hill Lake (Somerset County) — Anglers were catching a few trout in the early morning hours of recent weeks.
Youghiogheny River Lake — Water was at full pool and yielding walleyes and smallmouth bass through July 18.
Loyalhanna Creek, Conemaugh River, Kiskiminetas River (Westmoreland County) — As conditions allowed after heavy rainfall in mid-July, anglers were catching nice numbers of smallmouth bass. Loyalhanna Creek also was yielding nice-size panfish and rock bass, mostly on minnows.
NORTHCENTRAL REGION
Spring Creek (Centre County) — Good flow and color were reported in mid-July, along with productive early- and late-day nymphing. Anglers were advised to avoid mid-day fishing. Tricos were hatching in the mornings.
Hammond Lake (Tioga County) — Don’s Tackle Shack reported that the hybrid striped bass were hitting on crankbaits, crawler harnesses and stickbaits through July 16. Shad patterns in green, purple, and blue were effective. With bass herding bait and surface feeding in the evening and night hours, shad- or bone-colored poppers and other topwater lures were recommended.
Hills Creek, Beechwood lakes (Tioga County) — Perch and bluegills were biting on live minnows, crawlers and slider grubs through mid-July.
Tioga Spillway (Tioga County) — Don’s Tackle Shack reported good smallmouth bass, walleye, panfish, and, occasionally, hybrid striped bass action through July 16. Jerkbaits, squarebill crankbaits and topwater baits were working. The wipers and smallmouth bass were hitting Whopper Ploppers in the evening. Live shiners, nightcrawlers, twister tail grubs and small swimbaits also were effective.
Pine Creek (Lycoming County) — Water was low in mid-July, but anglers were catching some smallmouth bass on crawfish patterns, minnows, and small topwater poppers.
SOUTHCENTRAL REGION
Raystown Lake (Huntingdon County) — Some nice largemouth bass were reported on Ned rigs and other finesse baits in recent weeks. One angler caught a 291⁄2-inch walleye trolling live bait early one morning in early July.
Juniata River (Huntingdon, Mifflin counties) — Catfish were biting crawlers and chicken livers at night through mid-July. Smallmouth bass and carp also were hitting.
Juniata River (Juniata County) — Smallmouth bass and a few walleyes were reported on four-inch tubes, twisters and crawlers in the early morning and late-evening hours through July 18.
Juniata River (Perry County) —Smallmouth bass were biting on stonecats and artificial tubes, twisters, crawlers, and jerkbaits in recent weeks. Anglers are reminded that sections of the river are catch-and- release-only.
Little Buffalo State Park Lake (Perry County) — Bluegills were hitting in recent weeks. Small crawlers, wax worms, and meal worms were effective when fished deep, since the bluegills had moved to deeper water.
NORTHEAST REGION
Lake Wallenpaupack (Pike County) —Nice smallmouth and largemouth bass were hitting on green tubes and rubber worms through July 20.
Belmont Lake (Wayne County) —The largemouth bass bite picked up in mid-July, with early morning fishing around weed beds and other structure productive.
Prompton Dam (Wayne County) — Largemouth and smallmouth bass were hitting on live baits and jigs in the morning and evening hours. Panfish were biting on bobbers and crawlers along the shoreline.
Susquehanna River (Susquehanna County) — Smallmouth bass were biting hellgrammites, and channel catfish were reported, especially from late afternoon into evening.
Pohopoco Creek (Carbon County) — Trout-stocked water downstream from the dam breast of Beltzville Lake was cooler than other area waters in mid-July.
Lehigh River —Good smallmouth bass action was reported through mid-July. Anglers also were catching catfish and eels in the slower-moving pools. Those targeting trout near Bowmanstown were catching trout on flies, stickbaits and spinners as conditions allowed in mid-July.
Mauch Chunk Lake (Carbon County) — A nice bass bite was reported in recent weeks, but many catches were sub-legal size on this Big Bass Program water, where the creel minimum is 15 inches. Chain pickerel, bass and an evening catfish bite were reported off the fishing pier at the boat launch.
SOUTHEAST REGION
Delaware River (Philadelphia County) — Brinkman’s Bait and Tackle reported July 21 that hot weather made channel catfish active on bunker and liver, and carp on boilies and corn. Snakeheads up to 5 pounds were reported by anglers targeting them with topwater baits over lily pads
Delaware River (Bucks County) — The waters near Washington’s Crossing and New Hope were yielding smallmouth bass on rubber worms and minnows.
Octoraro Reservoir (Chester County) — Jim Neary’s Bait & Tackle reported July 21 that crappies were hitting on minnows and curly tail grubs, and the white perch bite was in full swing, with nice numbers coming on small jigs and crawlers or minnows, or anything shiny. Bass were more elusive during spates of hot weather but taking plastic worms, Carolina rigs, or square-billed or deep-diving crankbaits. Catfish were reported on live shiners.
Little Schuylkill, Schuylkill rivers (Schuylkill County) — Low water levels made for difficult kayaking in mid-July. Trout fishing was productive on worms, minnows and spinners in the early morning hours.
Tuscarora Lake (Schuylkill County) — The bass bite was hit or miss in mid-July. Panfish angling was more productive, especially in the weedy parts of the lake. A few chain pickerel were reported. Walleyes and muskies were inactive.
Locust Lake (Schuylkill County) — Trout were moving to the middle of the lake and deeper water in mid-July, making it almost necessary to have a boat to fish for them. Nice bass and pickerel bites were reported near the shoreline. Sunfish were hitting in big numbers.
Marsh Creek Lake (Berks County) — Nice-size largemouth bass were hitting on topwater baits through July 20.
Point Pleasant, New Jersey — Brinkman’s Bait and Tackle reported July 21 that trigger fish up to 12 and 14 inches were hitting on clams all along the Jersey coast. Porgy were plentiful, and anglers were boating their limit of two sea bass in sizes up to 5 pounds. Ling were hitting. Sublegal cod were released. Fluke were hitting squid strips. And bluefin, yellowfin, and big-eye tuna were hitting well for trollers.
