Kilimanjaro summit through Umbwe

My girlfriend and I booked Kilimanjaro for the end of the year.

The operator recommended the Umbwe route because it is less crowded, so we went with that one.

After reading some forums and personal blogs, it looks like some people advise against taking this route unless you are an experienced hiker. Some mention sections of the route being exposed and potentially dangerous.

Has anyone here summit Kilimanjaro through Umbwe? How much of this is true?

We are both in very good physical condition but don't consider ourselves experienced hikers.

Also my gf is a little bit uncomfortable with heights, so making her go through exposed, narrow trails might delay our ascend.
