District 1 – Baudette area
CO Ben Huener (Roseau) checked blackpowder deer hunting, trapping, angling, and spearing activity throughout the week. Violations included taking deer with the use of bait, failure to wear blaze orange, illegal use of an ATV on a state wildlife management area, and no registration on an ATV.
CO Eric Benjamin (Warroad) reports the forest was busy during the weekend with the muzzleloader deer season and the fisher/pine marten/bobcat trapping season opening. The ice on Lake of the Woods continues to thicken.
CO Jeremy Woinarowicz (Thief River Falls) continued to follow up on cases from the past firearms deer season, checked muzzleloader deer hunters, and monitored angling activity in the Thief River Falls area. Anglers are reminded to take precautions when venturing onto frozen lakes and rivers.
CO Demosthenes Regas (Blackduck) reports trappers were checked as the fisher/pine marten season opened. Time was spent taking calls and issuing permits for car-killed deer and working on cases from the firearms deer season.
District 2 – Bemidji area
CO Tom Hutchins (Crookston) reports checking muzzleloader hunters this past weekend. Time also was spent checking trappers and anglers.
CO Brice Vollbrecht (Bemidji) and COC Shane Zavodnik spent time following up on a variety of deer hunt-related cases during the week. An effort was undertaken involving the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, COC Goodman, CO Baumbarger, CO Slatinski, as well as Ontario game wardens. They were part of the effort to locate and interview suspects involved in illegally taking a buck during the past week. The buck was found to have been transported to central Minnesota, with one of the suspects verified as crossing into Ontario shortly after the hunting violation occurred. Quick action by law enforcement officers aided in admissions from all the suspects involved. Enforcement action will be taken.
CO Chris Vinton (Perham) and COC Garrett Thomas spent time checking local ice anglers, responded to a trespassing complaint, and conducted trapping enforcement. They also assisted local authorities in the search for a missing, suicidal individual believed to have had a gun in the woods. Additionally, an investigation was conducted regarding two deer that were found killed and abandoned in a field.
CO Al Peterson (Osage) and COC Lerchen worked muzzleloader deer hunting opener and followed up on ongoing cases. One new case involving shooting from the road, at night, from a vehicle, was handled. Multiple charges against two suspects are pending, and one bow was seized.
CO Angie Warren (Mahnomen) worked ice-angling activity. Warren also assisted a local police department with a traffic stop and continued follow-up on open cases.
District 3 – Fergus Falls area
CO Tricia Plautz (Henning) and COC Annette Kyllo continued to follow up on deer season cases and complaints. Several violations were found, including folks failing to register their deer harvest. The officers also followed up on a deer that was shot and found by a neighboring landowner.
CO Shane Osborne (Evansville) checked anglers and deer and pheasant hunters. Several complaints were received and investigated, including hunting from the roadway for deer and pheasants. He also took calls regarding an injured eagle and deer hunting out of season.
CO Brian Holt (Osakis) checked pheasant hunters and trapping activity in the area. Complaints were received regarding shooting from the road and trespassing.
CO Daniel Baumbarger (Glenwood) and COC Goodman interviewed a suspect and collected evidence related to an illegally taken buck from the Bemidji area. They also spent time checking muzzleloader deer hunters, pheasant hunters, and anglers.
District 4 – Walker area
CO Mark Mathy (Cass Lake) followed up on existing cases from the deer season. The first ice anglers and pike spearers were seen in the area. A deer-stuck-in-the-ice complaint was received, and a car-killed deer possession permit was issued. Enforcement action was taken for an overlimit of northern pike and no angling license in possession.
CO Randy Posner (Staples) worked the muzzleloader deer-hunting opener. Violations of trespass and untagged deer were found. Complaints about deer carcass dumping continue to be reported. A complaint about road hunters in the Pillager area was investigated. Ice angers were out and are catching some fish. However, the ice conditions are poor, inconsistent, and dangerous.
District 5 – Eveleth area
CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls) reports the firearms deer season ended and muzzleloader and trapping seasons began. Few trappers were out and about as complaints about low fur prices were frequently heard. Trappers are reminded to make sure they are wearing blaze orange when muzzleloader hunters are in the field at the same time.
CO John Slatinski (Ray) reports trapping and muzzleloader deer hunting were the main activities focused on this week. Slatinski assisted other officers from the Bemidji area with a deer-poaching case.
CO Troy Fondie (Orr) reports monitoring area lakes and access sites. The recent warmup has deteriorated what little ice was present. No angling activity was observed.
CO Don Bozovsky (Hibbing) worked the fisher, marten, and bobcat trapping opener as well as the muzzleloader deer opener. He also followed up on rifle deer season cases. A snowmobiler fleeing case was worked, with CO Bozovsky tracking the snowmobiler to a house miles away. He also assisted the Keewatin Police Department with an uncooperative passenger during a traffic stop, and the Hibbing Police Department with a hold-up alarm and a complaint about an impaired driver. Bozovsky found and stopped the vehicle. The driver was arrested for DWI by the police department.
CO Matt Frericks (Virginia) checked muzzleloader deer hunters, and nearly every one Frericks checked was cited for having a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle. One of the hunters cited for the loaded firearm violation was stopped in his ATV with his father. When the hunter was asked for his deer license, he replied that he didn’t have one. The hunter told Frericks he thought it was OK because he and his father were hunting together and he was hunting under his father’s license.
District 6 – Two Harbors area
CO Anthony Bermel (Babbitt) worked primarily marten trapping and some deer season follow-up. A group of trappers contacted the CO after catching a lynx in a foothold trap. The animal escaped with the trap still on its foot. The group, including one individual from Australia who was along for the experience, and Bermel, were able to push the lynx into heavy cover where the chain got caught. While Bermel held a shield, the trapper successfully released the lynx unharmed.
CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) checked trappers and ATV riders, and responded to wildlife-related calls.
CO Sean Williams (Ely) checked his first groups of ice anglers slowly making their way onto the ice early in the week. Warm weather arrived during the holiday and there was rain and freezing rain that continued into the weekend, which made for a slow start to the muzzleloader season.
CO John Velsvaag (Ely) took several calls about trapping and the new pike regulations as they pertain to spearing.
CO Mary Manning (Hovland) continued to follow up on firearms deer season issues and worked opening weekend of the muzzleloader deer season. A few bear bait stations were found to have stands still in place, and some hunters will be receiving “reminders” by mail.
District 7 – Grand Rapids area
CO Randy Patten (Northome) checked anglers, trappers, and muzzleloader hunters. He also worked baiting complaints, issued car-kill permits for various animals, and assisted in locating a lost trapper.
CO Jayson Hansen (Bigfork) continued training COC Nathan Benkofske. Time was spent assisting the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office and other COs in locating a lost 16-year-old near Wirt.
CO Mike Fairbanks (Deer River) conducted follow-up investigations regarding deer cases and monitored trapping activity. Fairbanks and his K9 partner Si also assisted in locating a lost trapper. Enforcement action was taken for license issues and OHV registration issues.
CO Jimmy Van Asch (Pengilly) reports working muzzleloader deer hunters and trapping and angling activity. Time was spent completing an open big-game investigation from the firearms deer season.
District 8 – Duluth area
CO Andy Schmidt (Duluth) followed up on cases from the deer season and met with the county attorney. Ice anglers were checked as they returned to shore, and Schmidt followed up on calls pertaining to the trapping season and muzzleloader deer-hunting opener.
CO Kipp Duncan (Duluth) and COC Leah Kampa responded to a call about a deer in a person’s basement. Duncan and Kampa were able to wrestle the deer up the stairs and outside without hurting the deer or anyone inside the residence. Deer possession permits were issued throughout the week. Kampa also spoke to a news broadcast about ice safety, and trapping enforcement was worked in the Lynx Management Zone.
CO Jeff Humphrey (Cromwell) followed up on firearms deer season cases and worked the muzzleloader deer opener. Ice anglers were seen venturing out onto area lakes, but caution is advised. Humphrey attended funeral services for retired CO Bob Hodge (Ely) as part of DNR Enforcement’s Honor Guard contingent.
Lake Superior Marine Unit
CO Matt Miller (Lake Superior Marine Unit) and COC Tony Elwell conducted patrols inland along the North Shore. The pair report slow activity for the muzzleloader deer opener. Time also was spent locating and checking trap lines.
District 9 – Brainerd area
CO Tim Collette (Brainerd) checked anglers out on marginal ice, including several wheelhouses that were pulled out via ATVs. He also monitored the start of the fisher-trapping season, and worked the muzzleloader deer season. Calls about hunter trespass and deer baiting were investigated, as was a call about an entire lake that was lowered by the blowing of a beaver dam with explosives.
CO Eric Sullivan (Pequot Lakes) investigated big-game litter and wanton waste cases around the area and continued working on big-game investigations. Sullivan also conducted a site visit where a wolf depredation was reported.
District 10 – Mille Lacs area
CO Dustie Speldrich (Willow River) followed up on firearms deer season investigations and answered questions regarding youth snowmobile safety training.
CO Dan Starr (Onamia) worked early ice anglers and found panfish in buckets. The muzzleloader season opener found deer to be moving, and hunters are reporting good results. Calls about dumped carcasses are coming in, which could be prevented with the proper disposal of leftover deer parts.
CO Bret Grundmeier (Hinckley) and COC Jacob Swedberg continued working on complaints from the firearms deer season and followed up on deer-hunting cases. The first ice anglers of the year were checked.
CO Eugene Wynn (Pine City) spent the week following up on deer-season complaints and answering numerous questions about ice conditions and trapping. He also spent time checking WMAs and state forests for hunting activity as well as a few scattered anglers around Pine City.
CO Luke Croatt (Wealthwood) checked small-game and muzzleloader hunters. Time also was spent checking some ice anglers.
District 11 – St. Cloud area
CO Caleb Silgjord (Sauk Centre) spent time during the week monitoring angling activity in the station. Small lakes have some ice but anglers should be cautious when venturing out as there are still many open areas. The muzzleloader opener was worked with few hunters afield. Violations for the week included an illegal-size pike and no license in possession. Anglers are reminded that in the North-Central Zone, there is a limit of 10 northern pike, but not more than two may be longer than 26 inches. All pike from 22 to 26 inches must be released.
CO Chad Thesing (Albany) worked anglers as well as duck, deer, and pheasant hunters throughout the week. Ice conditions improved during the week on lakes that are frozen, with 5 to 6 inches being common. Some lakes are still open or have open spots on them. The muzzleloader deer season got off to a slow start. Enforcement action for the week included no license in possession, burning with no permit/burning prohibited materials, and no blaze orange during the gun deer season.
CO Keith Bertram (Long Prairie) spent the week checking anglers. Citations were issued for no angling license, illegal-length northern pike, and filling a public water without a permit.
CO Frank Rezac (St. Cloud) reports checking ice anglers and muzzleloader deer hunters. Follow up was also done on cases involving trespass and lending/borrowing deer licenses.
District 12 – Princeton area
CO Angela Londgren (Cambridge) checked hunters, anglers, and ATV riders, and took complaints about dumped animal carcasses.
CO Rick Reller (Buffalo) spent most of the week checking deer hunters and following up on cases from the regular firearms season. Enforcement action was taken for hunting deer over bait, illegally lending and borrowing deer licenses, and failure to tag and register deer.
CO Trent Seamans (Big Lake) patrolled for muzzleloader hunters and anglers. Additional time was spent checking waterfowl hunters and following up on dumping complaints. Seamans assisted a state trooper with a driving complaint that ended with the driver being arrested for driving with a canceled license.
CO Tony Musatov (Sauk Rapids) checked hunters and handled calls regarding illegally dumped deer carcasses. A waters complaint also was investigated. Complaints also were received for hunting outside of open hours.
District 13 – West Metro area
CO Alexander Birdsall (Waconia) reports that while checking a small-game hunter, the hunter stated his dog had run away. The dog was located about a half-mile away in the WMA and was returned to its owner. Assistance was given to an individual whose fish house became unhitched and rolled into a ditch. Remember to check your trailers before pulling them out of storage.
CO Tim Maass (Osseo) investigated a hunter harassment and trespassing complaint. Time also was spent on a hunting over bait and wanton waste investigation.
CO Arnaud Kpachavi (Mound) focused mainly on deer hunting and waterfowl hunting. He also investigated a baiting complaint, a deer-dumping complaint, and assisted with a report of a duck hunter hunting within city limits.
CO Vang Lee (ELCOP) worked bowhunters and muzzleloader hunters around the Twin Cities metro. He also patrolled state parks and state trails and took complaints about animals. He also issued a car-killed deer permit and returned a phone call regarding a duck-hunting complaint in Carver County.
District 14 – East Metro area
CO Tony Salzer (Ham Lake) patrolled Anoka County for hunting and ice-angling activity. S
CO Scott Arntzen (Forest Lake) spent the week checking anglers, trappers, archery deer hunters, and small-game hunters. Arntzen responded to several TIP complaints and fielded questions about the muzzleloader deer season.
CO Luke Gutzwiller (White Bear Lake) reports assistance was given to the Lino Lakes Police Department with two mature bucks whose antlers were locked together. One buck was found deceased. The officers were able to free the live buck from the deceased buck. A wildlife possession permit was issued to the resident who had found the deer in his backyard for the deceased buck.
District 15 – Marshall area
CO Andrew Dirks (Worthington) checked pheasant and muzzleloader deer hunters throughout the week. Follow-up investigations from the deer season were completed. Enforcement action was taken for transporting loaded firearms.
CO Matt Loftness (Marshall) spent the week working trapping, pheasant-hunting, deer-hunting, and ice-fishing enforcement.
CO Jim Robinson (Slayton) spent the week working hunters and conducting investigations. Muzzleloader deer season opened with good weather and a high number of hunters.
CO Craig Miska (Ortonville) spent the week checking anglers, small-game hunters, and muzzleloader deer hunters. He also conducted various investigations related to those activities.
District 16 – New Ulm area
CO Jeff Denz (Willmar) checked muzzleloader hunters, ice anglers, and pheasant hunters. He also issued car-killed deer permits.
CO Dustin Miller (Windom) began to work a deer investigation regarding a buck that was poached in Ann Township in northwestern Cottonwood County. Anyone with information regarding this is encouraged to contact Miller or call the TIP line. Muzzleloader season was worked and started off slowly for hunters. A public water complaint continues to be worked with local hydrologists.
District 17 – Mankato area
CO Chad Davis (Owatonna) checked big-game, small-game, and migratory waterfowl hunters, as well as trappers, anglers, and ATV operators during the week. Davis also spent time patrolling state parks and WMAs.
CO Jeremy Henke (Albert Lea) worked angling, small-game, and waterfowl enforcement this past week. Henke also reports numerous ice-fishing contacts.
CO Corey Wiebusch (Mankato) trained COC Tony Flerlage this past week. They handled complaints about baiting with the muzzleloader season opening up.
CO Chris Howe (St. Peter) worked the opening of muzzleloader deer season this past week. Howe also spoke to a youth snowmobile safety class about laws and ethics.
District 18 – Rochester area
CO Kevin Prodzinski (Wabasha) and COC Fitzgerald report some shotgun hunters put in a final effort this past week to fill their tags. One party encountered was particularly successful with 20 deer taken during the 3B season.
CO Mitch Boyum (Rushford) reports a few pheasant hunters were out and a few birds were seen in the bag. Hunters stated they flushed a few more birds since most of the corn has been harvested.
CO Tom Hemker (Winona) followed up on complaints about baiting deer, trespassing, shooting from the roadway, and taking too many deer. Hemker also received calls about butchered deer carcasses dumped in various locations.
CO Kylan Hill (Zumbrota) reports checking multiple duck hunters throughout the week as the area has some of the state’s remaining open water. Enforcement action was taken for unplugged shotguns, unsigned stamps, possessing toxic shot, and no license in possession.
